Album Magazine Adverts

This would have been a good magazine advert for the artists because it is bright, colourful and very eye catching.  With the colours used when you turn the page you would want to see what it is advertising. The layout of this image is good as all of the writing seems to fit in with the image well, and it does not block any of the advertisement.  The image itself looks like it has been computer generated, so it was most likely done with a CGI or graphical piece of hardware. This advertisement does not show what kind of genre the band is, because they have had two previous albums and people should know what to expect of them, although for people who do not know they should have added some kind of way to tell you what the genre is. The target audience that this advertisement seems to aim at is relaxed, or holiday goers, as it shows what looks like a private island. The font also used in this advertisement suits the picture in the background. For example when you look at the text “Gorillaz Plastic Beach” the writing seems to move like a wave, which is extremely effective as the writing is on top of the ocean in the picture. That same piece of writing is the boldest in the advertisement so that not only the image catches the viewers eyes, but the writing does as well.  I believe that this advertisement for the album was effective as it sold well, and the group went on a tour after this albums success.

This magazine advertisement for Kings of Leon Come Around Sundown, is in a way a very basic advertisement.  I say this because the layout is very basic, having the writing at the top and bottom, which is commonly used. So it does not make it that unique, such as the advertisement for the Gorillaz advertisement above. The colour of the advertisement is good for a number of reasons. For example the colour gives it that holiday kind of feeling, which I think they are trying to get across. But it also gives it that sunset look that links in with the name of the album that is Come Around Sundown. The font in this advertisement seems unique to this magazine advertisement where the letters have their own unique look to them. Also the way in which the name of the band is the biggest on the page, allows it to grab peoples eyesight. Although it could have been better if the name of the album was almost the same size, as it would also get attention to the album not just the band. The target audience for this could possibly be holiday goers because it has the palm trees in the background. I cannot see many ways in which this advert may have been manipulated by a program. The only thing in this image that I believe had some kind of technological improvement was the sunset, which may have been completed with Adobe Photoshop. In the same way as the Gorillaz Plastic Beach poster above it is very hard to tell what the genre of the band may be. So it may have been done because people know what the genre of the band is from previous albums.

The layout for this album is rather unique, for example compared to other advertisements for albums this looks more like an advert for a movie. This is because the name is in the middle and it has reviews, release etc at the bottom in that order, similar to movie posters. This makes the advert stand out from others. The colours that are mainly used in the middle of the page so when the person reading it turns over they are going to see an explosion of colour coming from the middle of the page and it will make them want to see what it is about. Although it can also be seen as plain because it is just one colourful image in the middle and the rest of the page is just white. I believe it does not matter because it is meant to be a playing card. The font is also rather unique because it varies across the advertisement, for example you have the name of the band in one font type, but it is also big and bold, which makes the name of the group stand out and makes it look unique. The font also changes for the name of the album and the font also becomes smaller and changes style, making the name of the album also unique. It is very clear that this advertisement has been worked on with Photoshop because in general the image could not have been made without Photoshop or some other kind of image editing program. I can see what genre the album is although a majority would not. Most albums that were rock or some variation of that genre always used playing cards in their songs and albums, for example the song The Ace of Spades. Although many may wonder what the playing card look stands for in its specific genre.
